Around the Corner is a short film set in an old neighbourhood in Hong Kong. During his summer break, university student Ah Hao helps at his grandmother’s traditional corner shop, where he encounters a mysterious girl in white who arrives every midnight to buy milk in a glass bottle. What begins as a series of silent encounters gradually develops into a quiet connection through a simple one-dollar bottle-return exchange. As Ah Hao begins to notice signs of distress beneath the girl’s reserved appearance, their seemingly ordinary meetings take on a deeper meaning. Her eventual disappearance — followed by a milk bottle filled with one-dollar coins and a simple note saying “Thank you” — causes him to reconsider everything that happened between them. Set against the disappearing culture of Hong Kong’s traditional corner shops, Around the Corner explores kindness, domestic abuse, memory and fleeting human connection, asking how a small and seemingly insignificant gesture can unexpectedly affect another person’s life.
